Further to the news that Rajinikanth is flying out to meet his Japanese fans after more than a decade, Galatta.com met the executive producer of Kathanayakudu, who gave us plenty of information about the Dancing Maharaja phenomenon.
Muthu was released in 1995 in India; soon after that, it was dubbed in Japanese, named The Dancing Maharaja and history was made. Rajni is known in Japan as the Indian Jackie Chan for his sensational ability to fly through the air and bash more villains than an ordinary hero can and all this with no martial arts training!
While speaking to Galatta.com, Kanthaswamy, executive producer of Kuselan, (Kathanayakudu in Telugu) said, “It took 3 months to dub Muthu into Japanese. They had to understand the Japanese way of talking and their sense of humour before even attempting to start the project. Sivaji – The Boss, too was a great success, because of the care that was taken while dubbing into Japanese and at the same time conveying the meaning of the original Tamil dialogues.” Not to mention the nine Japanese artistes who cavort with Rajni in a song, the Superstar’s acknowledgement of his Far Eastern fan club.
Not many know that Japan has a significant South Indian population, which would explain why Rajni’s movies are popular in Japan. But more than the Indians out there, it’s the Japanese who are amused and amazed at the on-screen antics of our very own Superstar. Since the Japanese are known for documenting the tiniest details, we are told that Muthu ran for 23 weeks with over a million Japanese seeing it at least once.
Kanthaswamy is coolly confident that Kuselan/ Kathanayakudu will excel even what Sivaji achieved in terms of critical acclaim and box office success in Japan.
