Director Konda’s last film was titled Clean Bowled but after his sudden and untimely death, V.N. Aditya revived the project and renamed it Kokila. Though the talented director Konda died of cardiac arrest while still in his thirties, he has left behind his magnum opus, his final gift, which leaves the audience clean bowled with clean comedy.
In short, the plot is about three college students who are roommates; Kanakala (Rajeev), Abhi (Shiva Balaji) and Rahul (Raja). All three fall for the same girl (Saloni) in their college. Each tries to impress her in his style. Later, Kanakala attempts suicide for his love, Rahul (Raja) sacrifices his love for his friend Abhi, considering that to be a display of true selfless love. Abhi (Shiva Balaji) still loves Saloni. During their holidays, Kanakala and Abhi leave the college hostel for Bangalore and home town for one day. Then things start going crazy, there is a comedy of errors, misconceptions and misunderstandings. Revealing any more will spoil the thrill for the moviegoer.
The film is funny, situational, complicated, and clean. Dialogues are a delight to hear and repeat. Music by Music director M S Madhukar has soothing numbers, melodies and mass songs, totally different from the sound of broken metal and noise which is today doled out as music. and it’s indeed a celebration of life. The music album is already on the top-selling charts. There is not a moment of boredom, only enjoyment and excitement all through.
Raja’s natural performance has improved and evolved with Kokila. Siva Balaji and Rajiv Kanakala have also performed well. The three have synergy, behave like true friends, and their competition makes the film exciting. Saloni, the heroine, has also improved and she has done a great job. Archana, Suhasini and Kota are all good in their roles. Archana is underutilized in her earlier movies, that is what we realize when we see her in Kokila.
